01Who we are and what this policy covers
Wrati Matrimony (“we”, “us”) is a matrimonial service operated by Wrati Matrimony. It helps adults in India and Indians abroad find a life partner through our website and mobile apps.
This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, who can see it, how long we keep it, and the rights you have. It applies to everyone who uses the service: members, the parents, siblings or relatives who create or manage a profile for them (“profile managers”), invited family members, and visitors to our website.
For the purposes of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (“DPDP Act”), Wrati Matrimony is the data fiduciary for your personal data. We also follow the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the rules made under it.
02The personal data we collect
Most of what we hold is what you, or the person managing your profile, choose to tell us. A matrimonial profile is detailed by nature, so please share only what you are comfortable with.
- AccountName, email address, mobile number, password (stored only in a scrambled form that cannot be read back, not even by us), language and time zone, the date you accepted our terms, and your referral code.
- ProfileGender, date of birth, marital status, children, height, weight, mother tongue, religion, community / caste, sub-community, gotra, manglik status, where you grew up, education (including institutions), occupation, employer, job title, income range, family details, lifestyle (diet, smoking, drinking, exercise), interests, languages, and the texts you write about yourself and your partner.
- Health and disabilityBlood group, health information and disability, only if you choose to add them. These fields are optional.
- LocationCountry, state, city and postal code, and map coordinates taken from your device (with your permission) or from the centre of your city. Coordinates are used only to work out distances; they are never shown to anyone.
- HoroscopeBirth time, birth place, and the signs, nakshatra and rashi we calculate from them. Birth time and place have their own visibility switches.
- Partner preferences and searchesWho you are looking for (age, height, religion, community, location, education, income and similar), saved searches and recent searches.
- Photos and videoThe photos and video introduction you upload. The original files are kept privately; members only ever see copies we approve, re-encoded with camera and location (EXIF / GPS) data removed.
- VerificationPhone and email confirmed by one-time code. If you choose to verify further: a selfie or liveness capture, a government ID (Aadhaar, PAN, passport, driving licence, voter ID or similar), and documents for education, employment, income, address, family or background.
- ActivityInterests sent and received, connections, shortlists, profile views, blocks, reports you file, messages, call history (who called whom, when, for how long - never the call itself) and notification choices.
- PaymentsPlans bought, amounts, GST, invoices, and what the payment gateway tells us about the payment: method, card network, issuing bank and a card fingerprint. We never receive or store full card numbers, CVV, UPI PIN or net-banking passwords.
- Devices and securityIP address, browser / app and device details, a device identifier, push-notification token, sign-in history, failed sign-in attempts and the approximate city and country of each sign-in (worked out from the IP address on our own servers).
- Support and safetyWhat you write to our support team, and the reports other members file about you along with our decisions.
Data about other people
If you create a profile for someone else, or add family details, you are giving us information about them. Please do so only with their knowledge and agreement. A person whose profile was created by a relative can claim it and take control of it.
03How and why we use your data
We process personal data on the basis of your consent, given when you register and when you choose optional features, and for the “legitimate uses” the DPDP Act allows, such as meeting a legal obligation. We use it to:
- Run your profile and show you matches - search, “matches for you” and similar-interest suggestions are worked out from your preferences and the profiles of members who have shown interest in similar people. These are rule-based rankings; they do not make legal or similarly significant decisions about you.
- Let members contact each other - interests, messages, voice and video calls, and contact details once the rules for sharing them are met.
- Verify members and keep the service safe - one-time codes, optional ID and selfie checks, review of photos, videos and profile text, handling reports, and blocking accounts that break our rules.
- Take payments - checkout, invoices, GST, refunds and the membership benefits you paid for.
- Help you write your profile - if you ask our writing assistant for a draft of your “About me”, it uses a few profile details such as your city, education and interests, never your name or contact details. Nothing is saved until you accept it.
- Talk to you - account, security and payment messages; match and activity alerts you can switch off; and promotional messages only if you opt in.
- Support you - answer questions, investigate complaints and, if you buy an assisted plan, let your relationship manager work on your search.
- Meet legal duties - tax records, responding to lawful requests from authorities, and keeping records of our safety decisions.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
04Automated checks
To protect members from scams and harassment, some checks run automatically:
- Messages and profile text are checked against rules maintained by our safety team (for example, attempts to share phone numbers, abusive words or known scam phrases). A message that matches may be blocked, have the matched part hidden, or be delivered and sent to our safety team for review. Profile texts that match are held for a person to review.
- Photos are checked automatically for image quality and whether a face is visible. Photos that do not pass, or that the check is unsure about, are reviewed by our team, and so is any photo a member reports. Videos are always reviewed by a person before anyone else can see them.
- ID and selfie checks compare your selfie with your profile photo and read the name and date of birth on your ID, using software we run on our own servers. When a check is uncertain, a member of staff decides.
Any decision to restrict or suspend an account is taken by a person, and you can ask us to look at it again (see Section 12).
05Who can see your information
Other members
- Your profile is shown according to your privacy settings: everyone, registered members, your matches, or only members you have accepted. You can hide your profile at any time.
- Your surname appears only after you connect with someone. Your income is hidden unless you choose to show it. Members see the distance to you, rounded, never your coordinates.
- Your phone number and email are shown masked. The full details are released only under your privacy settings and the viewer’s plan, and our staff may require the viewer to have verified with a selfie first.
- Each photo and your video can be set to everyone, members only, connections only, or private (shown only to people whose photo request you accept).
- You can choose whether others see when you are online or were last active.
- Members you block cannot see you or contact you, and you will not see them.
Family members you invite
If you invite a parent or relative to help, they can do only what you allow (for example viewing matches, or sending interests and messages on your behalf). You can change or withdraw their access at any time, and actions they take are labelled as theirs.
Our staff
Staff see only what their role needs. Contact details are masked in our admin tools; revealing them requires a recorded reason. Opening a reported message, photo or video is logged. If you buy an assisted service, your relationship manager (and their branch manager, which may be a franchise partner working under contract with us) can see and act on your profile and matches; no other relationship manager can.
Service providers
We use trusted companies to help run the service, such as secure cloud storage, payment processing, and delivering emails, text messages and notifications. They receive only the data needed for that task, must keep it confidential and secure, and may not use it for their own purposes.
When the law requires it
We disclose information to police, courts or other authorities when Indian law requires it, and we may share it to protect someone from harm or to investigate fraud.
06Messages and calls
Messages are stored on our servers so you can read them on any device, and are subject to the automated checks in Section 4. Staff read a message only when it is reported or flagged, and that access is logged.
Voice and video calls connect your devices directly or, when a network does not allow that, through our own relay server. Calls are never recorded. We keep only the call log: who called whom, audio or video, when, for how long and how it ended. Our safety team can end a live call that has been reported.
08How we protect your data
- Data travels over encrypted (HTTPS) connections.
- Passwords, one-time codes and session tokens are stored only as one-way hashes.
- Original photos, videos and verification documents are kept in private storage and opened only through links that expire within minutes, after a permission check.
- Staff access is limited by role, can require a one-time code at every sign-in, and sensitive actions are recorded in an audit log that staff cannot edit.
- You can turn on two-step sign-in for your own account and see recent sign-ins and devices in Settings.
09How long we keep your data
- Your profile, photos, preferences and activityWhile your account is open.
- When you delete your accountYour profile is removed from search and other members at once, your sessions end, your public photos are withdrawn and your video files are deleted.
- MessagesKept after deletion, because they also belong to the other person in the conversation.
- Payments and invoicesAs long as tax and accounting laws require (generally up to eight years).
- Reports and safety decisionsKept to protect other members and to prevent banned people from returning.
- Verification documentsUntil you delete them or ask us to erase them; a check you withdraw before it is decided is deleted at once with its images.
- One-time codesExpire after 5 minutes.
- Server logsAbout 30 days.
- BackupsUp to 14 days.
If you want data erased that is not removed automatically, write to our support team. We will erase it unless the law requires us to keep it, and tell you what we kept and why.
10Your rights and choices
Under the DPDP Act you have the right to:
- Access a summary of the personal data we hold about you and how we use it, and the names of those we have shared it with.
- Correct, complete or update it. Most of it you can edit yourself in your profile and Settings.
- Erase it, subject to the records we must keep (Section 9). You can delete your account yourself in Settings.
- Withdraw consent at any time, as easily as you gave it. This does not affect what we did before, and some features cannot work without the data.
- Nominate someone to exercise these rights for you if you die or become unable to.
- Raise a grievance with us, and then with the Data Protection Board of India if you are not satisfied.
For access, erasure or a nomination, write to our support team from the email address on your account. We may ask you to confirm your identity first.
Choices in the app and website
- Privacy settings: who sees your profile, photos, contact details, horoscope details, and online status.
- Notification settings: each kind of alert by email, SMS, push and in-app. Security and payment messages cannot be switched off.
- Promotional emails and WhatsApp messages are sent only if you opt in; every email has an unsubscribe link and you can reply STOP on WhatsApp.
- Hide your profile, block members, or delete your account at any time.
11Children
The service is only for adults of legal marriageable age in India: at least 21 for men and 18 for women. We refuse any profile with a date of birth below these ages, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.
If you believe a child is using the service, or a profile shows a child, report it from the profile or write to our support team. Read our Child Safety Standards.
12Grievances and contact
If you have a concern about your data or about content on the service, contact our Grievance Officer (details below). We acknowledge complaints within 24 hours and aim to resolve them within 15 days, as the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 require.
13International transfers and changes to this policy
Some of our service providers process data outside India (for example in the United States). We transfer data only as the DPDP Act permits and only to providers bound to protect it.
We will update this policy when our service changes, and the date at the top will change. If a change materially affects how we use your data, we will tell you by email or in the app before it applies.
